Congratulations to Our 2024 Awardees!
Founding members of the Dr. Horace Jackson Legacy Scholarship proudly awarded John W. North High senior Kevin Cuaron the 2024 scholarship at the Senior Awards Night, May 12.
Molly Williamson, Class of 1974 started by congratulating the Class of 2024, saying it was 50 years ago that she walked across the stage to be handed her diploma by her principal, Dr. Horace Jackson. He was one of the most influential adults at the time as was her Sociology teacher, Glenn Anderson, who was in attendance at the ceremony. Molly told the graduating students, "your teachers are amazing and it's remarkable to me that I'm back here, 50 years later, with the teachers that I love." She noted that at the time, she wanted to travel rather than to attend college, but she knew a college degree was important and eventually found her path to a career in broadcast journalism at CBS News in New York. Michele Himmelberg, also class of 1974 and Nancy Biddle Sutterley, Class of 1975 helped present the awards to Kevin, whose scholarship is worth $6,000 over two years while attending Riverside Community College. Kevin, like Molly, isn't sure what he wants to do, but knows college will make a positive difference in his life. His goal is to transfer to a UC after earning his Associates degree at RCC. Second place winner, Ashley Ruiz, was awarded $1,500 and has plans to attend RCC before transferring to UC Irvine where she will pursue a degree to become a therapist, working in the mental health field. Third place winner, Krystal Huerta whose scholarship is worth $750, plans to pursue a nursing degree at RCC's prestigious program. All three of the 2024 award recipients are exemplary representatives of the scholarship, which honors the late Dr. Horace Jackson and his dedication to higher education and inclusivity.
