Hello Friends,

As we begin a new year, we want to thank you for supporting the Dr. Horace Jackson Legacy Scholarship. Through your efforts, we plan to empower future leaders in the world who can make a difference just as Horace Jackson did. Your
donation will help a young person to realize their potential. We want them to know we believe in them. As Dr. Jackson proved, one person can have a far-reaching impact and you are doing just that in lifting up students at JW North High through this scholarship.

The Application
The scholarship application will go out for students this week! We are looking for students who show heart, a desire to continue learning, and a deep commitment to creating a better, more inclusive world. The selected student will have shown an interest in activism and participation in social justice efforts in school and their community. You will be able to access the scholarship and the criteria on our website this week.

The Fund Balance
Due to the generosity of more than 100 donors, we have raised over $36,000 in just 3 months toward our first goal of $100,000 for an endowed fund. We invested the first $30,000 in what's considered a moderate risk (balanced) fund through the Inland Empire Community Foundation. The 80-year-old, well respected organization holds many charitable funds, enabling us to claim 401 3(c) non-profit status, making all donations tax-deductible.

The Scholarship
As we continue to grow the fund, we've decided to commit to one $1,500 scholarship this year to a student who will attend a 2-year accredited college. As the fund grows, we award more scholarships. While we will choose the awardee, the IECF will be the conduit between the student, JW North High and the college, ensuring that the money awarded is used as intended: to further the student's education. Should the student for any reason need to withdraw from the institution, any funds leftover will be returned to the scholarship fund. (The IECF charges 2% annually for its service.)

The Scholarship Committee
There will always be two representatives from JW North High on the committee, along with one representative who knew Horace Jackson, one recent alum connected to North and the Riverside community, and a member of the founding team. We are very excited to have the following representatives:

  • Carolyn Jackson '2008 - Dr. Jackson's daughter

  • Virg (Saucedo) Burroughs '76 - Secretary for JW North High

  • Eric McLean - Social Studies, AVID, Education Academy teacher at JW North High

  • Oscar Edwards '72 - Mentee and student of Dr. Jackson's first freshman class

  • Molly Williamson '74 - Founding member of Dr. Horace Jackson Scholarship

Class Challenge
We are in the midst of a fun class challenge to see which class can bring in the most money! Check out the graph below (created on December 30th) and where your class currently stands. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, help your class help the Class of 2022. The challenge ends on January 31st.

Donor List
We have updated the website to include all our donors to date. If your name isn't on there...let's change that! You can make a difference. These students are our next leaders. Let's work together to create a stronger, more inclusive society, just as we learned from Dr. Horace Jackson.
